Brief Encounter

From the best festival experience yet to the worst.

The Dawn Chorus is my first film to be selected at the 'best short film festival in the UK' and so I was more than a little excited as I headed to the Watershed for the Encounters Short Film Festival screening on Friday night. I arrived early, hoping to see another programme of films first, only to find that it was all sold out and there weren't any filmmaker tickets reserved or available. Dammit. Anyway, I went to get a sandwich at the bar next door, and after waiting 30 mins was told that, ooops, the waiter hadn't given the order to the kitchen. Grrr...

So I head upstairs to the Film Council party, which was fun, and saw lots of familiar faces. But then had to rush into the screening. We're in Cinema 1 - which seats about 200 and is full to bursting. It's the hippest audience I've ever seen - everyone is under 25, with trendy hair and stripey jumpers. The programme is given a big UP from the programmer, Mark Cosgrove, who tells us to get ready for scarey and weird short films.

After the first 3 films two things are clear:
1. This is a programme of genre films, with flying red-eyed hamsters, blood-thirsty ogres and not much brain activity required
2. The audience doesn't think much of any of them.

Oh, and half way through the third film this beat begins, which I think might be some kind of expressive sound design, but it's soon clear that there is some kind of live music downstairs, and everyone is vibrating from the bass coming through the floor of the cinema.

My film starts, and the audience is silent. They listen hard over the music we can hear from below. They sort of get the film, at least a few people laugh by the end, but it's not a great reaction. When the film finishes, the guy next to me leans over and says to his friend 'Another duff one'.

I stay for one more film, and then leave. I go and complain to a member of staff and hear that the festival doesn't have any control over the bar below. However, I soon find out that the same thing happened the night before. And given that the festival has been in this venue for years, and that there's been a late lounge programme for a while, it seems pretty lame that they haven't sorted this out before now.

AAAARGH.

WRAP-A-LORUS

It's been a wild week here in Wilmington. We had two high school screenings of the movie, and the 'official' screening last night at Jengo's Playhouse. Official business aside, I've seen some great flicks, eaten more grits than you might like to consider, and met some of the coolest and most talented filmmakers out there. I write this with a lump in my throat.

Highlight memories include:
- Snapping crab legs with Amy at the Oyster Bar on Dock
- Watching Kohl eat four bowls of potato soup at the Bellamy Mansion
- Attempting to remember Current TV Kasha's entire surname, but failing
- Seeing Cap'n Dan bent double laughing as the Superkiiiiids performed the Rapping Queens
- Being ordered by the Colonel to throw stones on two, jump on three and snap on four as the sun set behind us on Wrightville beach
- Levi diving face first down the inflatable slide, lego-hair flying
- The Superkiiiiids presenting the Colonel with a birthday cake on his unbirthday
- Jousting with inflatable man-sized beer bottles in Jengo's playground
- Being proposed to in Hawaiian by some guy named Phil
- Locating the spirit JPoop with a ouija board at 4 in the morning
- Laughing so hard my whole body ached, daily
- Beachalorus, Pukalorus, Cakalorus, Withdrawalorus, Potteryalorus, Stickerlorus, Copsalorus, DixieGrillalorus...

Today as Teamalorus finds itself in Arizona, Portland, Greensboro, Springville and Wilmington, I raise my glass to Jesusalorus for bringing us all together - cheers!

The Best Fest In The World?

It gets my vote. Cucalorus rules. It rules-a-lorus.

Yesterday we had the most hysterical high school student screening, PACKED with kids talking to the screen, to each other, and laughing out loud. Introduced by The Superkiiiiids! the fun began early. At 9:30am I met fellow filmmakers Levi, Amy, Kohl and (later) Seth whose films also played. And were brilliant. We went out for breakfast at the Dixie Grill, and I tried grits for the first time (verdict: nice, I think, need to try some more).

Later we went to local bookstore and spent hours pouring over old books stacked up to the ceiling, before watching the sun set over the Cape Fear river (yes! That Cape Fear!). A local policeman told us that there was a big gator called Charlie in the water, so that stopped us finding out the answer to our question - salt or fresh water?

Off to Dance-A-Lorus - opening night celebration at the Thalian Hall - where films were shown and dancers performed in front of them on stage. Truly brilliant I was inspired by one 65 year old performer to take up amateur dance, even if just in front of my own TV.

One of the best things about Cucalorus is a Filmmakers Lounge, where there is not only great company, but free cookies, muffins, salsa and dip and any drink you fancy. What joy.

Last night ended with a party on the riverfront - a Carnivale! The highlight, for me, was the inflatable slide - which I slid down about 25 times. Completely out of breath, it has confirmed this as the best festival in the world for me. Easily pleased, you say? Hardly, I say.

CUCALORUS, BABY

I arrived last night and was met at the airport by wonderful Mary and driven to my heavenly bed and breakfast. Literally heavenly: the walls are painted sky blue with clouds on the ceiling. This morning I have a High School screening, which should be fun, and then I'm taking a moment to explore Wilmington - who knew it was a beach town? I think I may never leave.

SCREENING AT THE EGYPTIAN

Today's screening at the theatre on Main Street was another packed house. A quieter response, but after the show someone told me that our film had made her cry. Which was nice.

I then popped over to the New Frontier artspace on Main, where there was some terrific work on show. Below are some images I captured, and you can read more about it on the Sundance website.

Then lunch with our friend An from Arri - whose cameras we used to shoot the pic, so it felt good to see them up here.

MONDAY

Having not seen any movies for two days, today we saw two: PADRE NUESTRO by Chris Zalla and THE POOL by Chris Smith. Both massive accomplishments, and for me, I've now found my favourite film of the festival. Go and see THE POOL - any chance you get.

In the evening we had the Shorts Party - best food yet, and then onto The Pool Party where we were served Indian Rum and Pabst Blue Ribbon beer, bringing together the Milwaukee and Goan themes deliciously.

Celebrity sightings were low for me but Jeremy saw Steve Buscemi and Goose from Grease 2. And I've lost him to Vera Farmigia, whose name he can't say now without sighing. Jenn, much to her excitement, saw Harvey Weinstein. I did see Troma's Toxic Avenger, but didn't know who he was, so not so excited.

GHOSTS IN THE MACHINE

Back at the CHASING GHOSTS arcade today, we spent the early evening hanging out with our new friends Mat Kirkby and Miranda. Mat's very funny movie, HARD TO SWALLOW is part of the same shorts programme we're screening in. The computer games are open to all and free, so it's hard not to get sucked in.

This morning, instead of church, we had our 3rd screening of the movie. It went well, and we had a wonderful Q&A with interested audience members. Then onto the Columbia Brunch, with more fried food and mimosas, and tone of the day was set.

Celebrity sightings were up a notch with a brush by Parker Posey on Main Street. Awesome.

COLUMBIA PARTYING PARK CITY STYLE

Today was the Directors Brunch at Mr. Redford's Sundance Resort. I had my hair cut specially and have promised many people pictures of me and Sundance. We rode the bus over an hour up there, and the excitement buzzed around the room full of filmmakers, until Geoff Gilmore announced that Bob is filming and couldn't make it. I have to confess I died a little death.

But it was still fun, and we then went to the Columbia Reception, where we hung out with many colleagues and friends. I've included some pictures below.

Jenn went to our Salt Lake City screening today and tells me it was very successful. Apparently the high school truancy rate in the city is at the highest during these 10 days of the year... but that was good news for us - happy viewers and lots of questions for Jenn. I have no doubt she did us proud down there.

SMACK DOWN BY CATHERINE KEENER

After last night's screening of CHICAGO 10 (the opening movie of the Festival) I was in the bathroom washing my hands, listening in to a conversation between some other women who were talking about how much they preferred this year's opening movie to last year's. I wasn't paying much attention, operating on about 2 hours of sleep and no food, but when they tried to remember the name of the movie they couldn't come up with it. So I let them know what it was called. At which point two things happened - first, several of the women left the bathroom, and second, Catherine Keener appeared next to me, and told ME how she's sorry we thought they were all such bitchy whiners in the movie, but that wasn't what they had intended. My mouth full of marbles, I told her that 'No, no! I LOVED the movie!' which, naturally, came out as insincerely as if I hadn't (I did, for the record). It didn't seem worth the effort as she went on to punish me, with a smile, by describing how awful it had felt listening to the conversation in the bathroom. Desperate to prove that I wasn't one of the evil ones, I wanted to keep talking, in case she worked out that noone with my accent was participating in the catty ladies rooom crit. But all I could think to say was how great she was. It wasn't a wonderful moment.

Since then there have been better ones. Today's screening of GHOSTS OF ABU GHRAIB was amazing - an experience that was only improved listening to director Rory Kennedy talk about politics and the filmmaking behind the documentary. It's an HBO movie, so expect to see it some time soon - and do see it.

Another good one was getting my free Burton coat - it's so warm and so cool all at once. And, best of all, I'm a size small for them, which makes me love it all the more (eating disorder? Maybe. Men's sizes? More likely).

Also the movie is online and has been encoded with great style, so do check it out. Oh - and we saw Ian Olds (BOMB), Nanobah Becker & Danny Carrera (CONVERSION) and Chris Zalla (PADRE NUESTRO) today too, for some class Columbia action. And Crispin Glover for some McFly action. Jeremy's keeping track of the celebrity sightings, so we'll keep you updated.

We had our first screening tonight - at the Prospector - not a tiny venue. And it looked fantastic. The HD transfer shows everyone's work beautifully, and I was proud to be there with our film. The rest of the programme rocked, so it was a good day all around. Now I must sleep.

RELENTLESS DRIVE

DEATH TO SHORT FILM MANIFESTO

Here in London we have become political. Or, at least, we are part of a movement with a manifesto. LFF Programmer Philip Ilson has put together some tenets of what short films should, or should not, be, in conjunction with our programme DEATH TO SHORT FILM. It appears, with an article by Philip, in this week's London edition of Time Out magazine...

On a more grass-roots level, it seems the screenings went well. Laughs, meaningful silences, and two audiences who got it. As well as a great turnout from my London family and friends. Couldn't have asked for more.

3 RIVERS, PITTSBURGH

Hot off the press, we've just learnt we're playing as part of the Competitive Shorts Program at the Three Rivers Film Festival in Pittsburgh. LADIES IN WAITING, my last short, played there last year, so I couldn't be more thrilled to be returning with THE DAWN CHORUS.

Here's what the festival has to say about the shorts:
'Space is devoted within the Film Festival each year for a competitive selection of Short Films – a program for media artists to present work that allows them to creatively take risks, break new ground or challenge the viewer. TEXAS TRIUMPHANT

Just back from Austin, where we had a blast, and, amazingly and so happily, walked away with the award for Best Student Narrative Short! The hardware meant that my bag was searched going through security (I opened my bag when I returned home to find a little note from the Homeland Security Department - creepy) but having the chance to join David Milch, Sydney Pollack and Shane Black on the podium was something we shall remember for a while. The screening went well - and if you click on the TRAILER link opposite, you can see what people have to say about the movie. All in all, we've come to love Texas.

We're thrilled to announce that THE DAWN CHORUS has been invited to screen as part of the prestigious Edinburgh International Film Festival. The Festival is the longest continually running film festival in the world, and this year celebrates its 60th anniversary.

Bonnie and Lloyd Bukowski. Seats 17C and D.
It’s been 7 years since the plane crash that killed their parents, but every year Bonnie, Lloyd, and the other survivors return to the site - to reenact, to remember, to try to heal. When they discover this will be the last ceremony, Lloyd clings to the ritual more desperately than ever. Despite her brother's pressure, Bonnie resists. All she can do is remember when all she wants to do is forget. On their final surreal journey through the wreckage, Bonnie and Lloyd will face their memories, their fears and, ultimately, each other. And as dawn breaks, hopefully, they’ll come out the other side.
